A little history

The wine tradition of the region Utiel-Requena reaches more than 2,700 years of history. The archaeological sites found in this Designation of Origin put the beginning of the wine production and marketing in the Iberian period.

Dozens of wineries carved in stone The Pilillas of Requena, amphorae, documents and remains of grape seeds found and studied, trace the wine culture of Utiel-Requena wine’s origins in the Iberian Peninsula. Antiquity, continuity and uniqueness of the indigenous grape variety Bobal are the values on which this cultural landscape, called Territory Bobal, sits and chooses to be Candidate for World Heritage by UNESCO.

Territory and climate

The area of Utiel-Requena is located in the inland plateau in the province of Valencia (Spain), 70 km from the sea. It has a Mediterranean climate with continental characteristics due to its average altitude of 750 meters.

The production area covers some 35,000 hectares of vineyards and includes nine municipalities: Caudete, Camporrobles, Fuenterrobles, Requena, Siete Aguas, Sinarcas, Utiel, Venta del Moro and Villargordo del Cabriel.

Around 6,000 thousand families of winegrowers and over a hundred wineries, take advantage of the wine industry in the Utiel-Requena, so the wine is the main engine of the economy of this area.

Bobal Variety

The D.O.P. Utiel-Requena is a region of red wines: A 94.27% of the vineyard area is planted with red varieties. Bobal variety is the star of the Protected Designation of Origin Utiel-Requena, it accounts for 80% of production. It is the second most widespread grape cultivation at the national level after the Tempranillo variety. The climate and soil that needs this local variety, are perfectly suited to the area. It shows preference for upland, with short and dry summers, in which develops its characters.

Wines made from Bobal have an intense and characteristic color and tannin suitable index for aging. It offers intense color red wines, full-bodied and complex flavors.

Requena, the land of Cava

Requena, municipality belonging to the D.O. Utiel-Requena (http://utielrequena.org/) is one of the few Spanish towns outside Catalonia where cava is produced under the quality seal of the  CAVA O.D. . Over the years the cavas quality produced in Requena have been recognized with multiple awards at the most prestigious and high scores in major international competitions guides.

Ruta del Vino Utiel - Requena Casa Lucia is one of the Recommended by the Wine Route (“Ruta del Vino” in spanish), an association created to promote tourism indoor accommodation Utiel – Requena.

The Wine Route of the Utiel-Requena D.O born in 1999 thanks to the impulse of various entities and companies that aim to promote the tourism potential of this inland region, always linked to the ancient culture of wine. Currently, it comprises more than 50 establishments including warehouses, restaurants, hotels, museums, wine, active tourism companies and agencies, which constitute a very complete and attractive tourist offer for visitors.

Since its inception, it is involved in the project “Wine Routes of Spain” supported by ACEVIN (Association of Spanish Wine Cities) and the General Secretariat of Tourism, which establishes quality standards that all establishments must comply.

The Wine Route Utiel-Requena runs through ten municipalities : Camporrobles , Caudete , Chera , Fuenterrobles, Requena , Siete Aguas , Sinarcas , Utiel , Venta del Moro and Villargordo del Cabriel – dotted with vineyards offering numerous possibilities to enjoy your visit to the region.

In these lands, historically devoted to growing grapes and making wine in bulk, has recently produced a great change of mentality so that, through research and testing of new processing methods, the indigenous grape variety: Bobal, show all his qualities in increasingly better and more recognized by critics wines .

With this change have created numerous private wineries, which together with the traditional cooperative, open their doors to visitors to enjoy the tourism and showcase their facilities, processing systems and products.
